Collective Calling Newsletter

Dear Valued Partner,

As we step into the second quarter of 2025, our mission to restore dignity and hope continues to impact vulnerable children, families, and the homeless community. We (Paul & Gemma) are currently on the ground in Tanzania, working hard to push forward our child rescue program—ensuring that children in desperate situations receive the care, protection, and support they need.

Through your incredible support, we’ve been able to empower families, rescue children from dangerous situations, provide emotional and holistic care, and extend dignity to those experiencing homelessness. Your generosity and prayers are making a tangible difference, allowing us to continue this life-changing work and bring lasting transformation to those in need. Thank you for standing with us.

Blessings,

Paul & Gemma Carr

Tragic Cycle of Poverty

This month, one of the most heartbreaking discoveries we made was a family struggling in deep poverty—a widowed mother with three children, desperately trying to survive. Her eldest son, 15, is in school, but her two younger sons, aged 10 and 14, have never had the opportunity to learn. Instead, every day, they go to the streets, scavenging through garbage for leftover ugali (cornmeal porridge), which they sell to chicken vendors in the market to earn a small income. With no education and no other way to help their mother, these boys were trapped in a cycle of survival, exposed to the dangers of street life.

Their mother, working tirelessly on different farms and selling vegetables at the market, simply couldn’t afford to send them to school or provide enough food for them. Faced with these impossible choices, she agreed to our new care plan—allowing her younger sons to come into our care at the Centre for 3-6 months. During this time, they will learn to read and write, break free from the habit of street life, and be prepared for school enrollment. This crucial step will not only protect them from the dangers of the streets but also open doors to a future beyond survival.

Meanwhile, their mother will receive support and empowerment to strengthen her small business, increasing her income so that when her children return home, they will be stepping into a more stable and hopeful environment. Of course, she will visit them regularly at the Centre, ensuring they maintain a strong connection as they transition toward a better future. By intervening now, we are breaking the cycle of poverty and giving this family the opportunity for a new beginning.

A Mother’s Fight for Her Children’s Future

Recently, we met a widowed mother battling epilepsy, struggling to provide for her four children. Her small, uneven-floored home was never meant for living, previously used for machinery storage. Every seizure brings the risk of serious harm, and she bears the scars of falling into fires during past episodes. Her fear of injuring her 2 year old during a seizure causes her to leave the child locked in the house for hours while she goes to work. Hunger is a constant challenge, worsened by missed medication and the need to work late at night selling bananas.

She is also HIV positive, leaving her feeling as though she has no hope and every day is a battle to keep going. The thought of leaving her children without a mother terrifies her, and so she fights—above all—to keep her eldest daughter in school, believing she will one day be the one to care for the younger siblings.

This is where you and Collective Calling come in.

We are moving the family into our Transitional House, a house that provides a safe, supportive environment for families in crisis, offering them an interim period of stability where they receive guidance, resources, and empowerment from our Centre and staff to strengthen their family life before reintegration. We will enrol the two boys aged 5 & 14yrs in school, and care for the youngest—giving this mother the support she needs to work safely, take her medication, and break the cycle of poverty.

With your help, we are restoring hope. Will you stand with us?

Emotional & Psychological Support

24 children at the Centre of Hope and 9 children at home received counselling sessions to help them heal from trauma.

9 families received emotional support, helping strengthen parental relationships and prevent violence.

Our team participated in a national campaign against child abuse, raising awareness of the hidden dangers and the responsibility of the community to protect children.

Family reintegration counselling was conducted, ensuring parents are ready to provide a loving and stable environment for their children.

During the month of February, 12 immigrants from Burundi, Congo, and Uganda were referred to us by the government and provided with temporary shelter, food, and hygiene support. Among them were children trafficked for farm labor, families escaping war, and others simply seeking a better life. We continue to provide care and work towards long-term solutions for these individuals.

New Rescues & Identifications

Six new children were identified and rescued found living in extreme poverty and not attending school.

Four families were newly identified various needs were noted and distributions made of clothes, soap and hygiene products.

18 more families have been identified all with various needs including beds, mattresses, educational items, food and empowerment items.

Many rescued children do not know their family details, making reintegration challenging, but we remain committed to supporting them.

We need your help!

We need your help to support newly identified families through our community outreach efforts. While we can’t house every child at the Centre of Hope, we can make a lasting impact by improving their home environment and providing essential empowerment resources. The need is great, but together, we can bring real change!

Mobile Shower Unit (MSU): Restoring Dignity to the Homeless

For those living on the streets, something as simple as a shower can be life-changing. This month, our Mobile Shower Unit (MSU) continued to restore dignity to the homeless community along the Costa del Sol. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, we’ve provided warm showers, hygiene kits, and clean clothing to those in need.
